KING SALMON - COHO SALMON (September-October)
The famous King Salmon run on the Salmon River starts in mid-September. Our first drift boat trips of the season are night trips done in the estuary of the Salmon River. On these trips we cast glow spoons and crankbaits for aggressive staging King Salmon. We also will fish with bottom rigs targeting fish moving into the estuary. These trips can be very productive and are a blast. It is hard to beat the fight of a large King Salmon in the estuary.
As the fish migrate upstream, we will run our drift boat on the upper portion of the Salmon River where we will fly fish and spin fish for King and Coho Salmon moving upriver. In addition, we also will back-troll plugs upon request. Our drift boat trips on the Salmon River are action packed and are a great way to see the river. Our Salmon season fills up quickly, so make sure to book out in advance.
STEELHEAD (November-April)
The Steelhead will follow the Salmon up the Salmon River in the fall where they will gorge on the abundance of Salmon eggs in the river. This is what makes the fall such a popular and effective time to come fish for Steelhead on the Salmon River. We utilize spin fishing set ups with floats to drift beads and egg sacs down the river to simulate the natural eggs in the river. This is an incredibly effective method for targeting these fish. On our drift boat trips, we will teach you the techniques needed to successfully catch these fish and put you in the right spots to make it happen! This is where our 20+ years of guiding experience comes into play!
As we head towards winter, the Steelhead will hold up in the deeper holes of the Salmon River where finesse becomes key. The metabolism of the Steelhead will begin to slow, and they will need less and less food each day to survive. This is when our superior knowledge of float fishing techniques will help you land more fish! Once spring comes, the water will begin to warm up and the Steelhead will begin to spawn. This is an excellent time of year to come fish as their metabolisms are on the rise and their aggressive spawning attitudes will make them susceptible to being caught!
